To ward off alienation and gloom, it is only necessary to remember the unremembered heroes of the past, and to look around us for the unnoticed heroes of the present. We all know individuals - most of them unsung, unrecognized - who have, often in the most modest ways, spoken out or acted on their beliefs for a more egalitarian, more just, peace-loving society. Secrecy, Archives, and the Public Interest Our problem in foreign policy is not a particular mad adventure: the Spanish American War or the Vietnam War, but a continuous set of suppositions about our role in the world, involving missionary imperialism, and a belief in America’s ability to solve complex social problems. They are the advocates for the homeless, the students asking a living wage for the campus janitors, the environmental activists trying to protect the trees, the air, the water.
